Frozen Treats at Patriots’ Outpost

Friday, August 27th, 2010

With Air Force Week in full force in NYC and the PGA Tour in town – it makes all the sense in the world for Ciao Bella to take part in Birdies for the Brave at this year’s Barclays Classic.

For those who don’t know Birdies for the Brave is a partner-program of the PGA tour that has raised millions of dollars for military men and women and their families. Their efforts include letter-writing campaigns for the troops; the distribution of care packages to troops stationed abroad; as well Patriots’ Outpost military hospitality chalets and military celebrations held during PGA TOUR tournaments.

Ciao Bella is honored to be a sponsor at the Patriots’ Outpost this year – so honored that our whole employee team is taking turns handing out samples at this five day event! CoconutKate and JuicyJ ran the first day when the weather wasn’t so great; but that didn’t stop our men in uniform from performing their drills in front of golf fans and honored family alike. Members of our accounts receivables and office management teams took over the second day where the weather was much fairer and the tournament was truly underway.

Guest speakers from the Navy SEALS, the Army, and the governor’s office all stopped by to pay their respects to our men/women in uniform. The troops really seemed to enjoy the event and took part in the meals provided by Chick-fil-A and Whole Foods Markets from Bergen County. Chick-fil-A took their patriotism to a new level by having their signature cow-mascot walk around with a sign saying ‘real heroes eat chicken’. Not being one to pass up on a photo opportunity that will turn into a conversation piece, I decided to pose with their mascot.

I certainly wasn’t the only one posing as nearly every troop that tasted our sorbet was glad to have their picture taken when they came back for seconds. Our Sicilian Lemon and Blood Orange sorbet were perfect on this hot August day where the sun did not want to take a break. For every man/woman in uniform that thanked me for their sample all I wanted to say was “No, thank you”. Ciao Bella’s sponsorship here is just a small way to thank our troops who lay everything on the line for us to enjoy our way of life. I encourage everyone to learn more about Birdies for the Brave and to tune into the rest of the Barclays Classic that continues through this Sunday.

Stolen Ciao Bella: The Most Tantalizing Game of “Clue” Ever

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

The problem

It seems that Colonel Mustard and his dreaded lead pipe has killed the gelato spirits in my freezer. Let me explain: someone has been stealing and eating large quantities of Ciao Bella (particularly the indulgently bold Blackberry Cabernet) out of my freezer, and I’m treating this unfathomable crime like a game of Clue. This is a “whodunit” mystery on a whole different level. I needed to get to the bottom of this.

Fortunately, my mystery was fairly simple to solve. Once I pulled out my imaginary magnifying glass, it was plainly obvious who was stealing the Ciao Bella in the kitchen with the greedy hands. I have two vicious guard dogs that patrol my house, and for their privacy we’ll refer to them as “Mike” and “Jill.” Mike and Jill are actually two 25-pound furry spitfires who bark their cute heads off anytime someone walks through the door. So, it was impossible for an intruder to have stolen my sorbet.

That’s when I narrowed my search down to close friends and family friends. With the aforementioned dog situation, we don’t invite too many people over the house. But, which “close friend” could commit such a horrible crime and eat my precious Ciao Bella? I found my answer to that question the next morning. My sister’s boyfriend, who for his privacy we’ll refer to as “Henry,” had been over the previous night. When I went to snack on the wine-inspired frozen treat, the above picture is what I discovered. A thief who doesn’t spend the time to destroy his own evidence? Shameful. I then realized that Henry had been stealing and eating my Ciao Bella all along, and had eaten 7/8 of a pint of Blackberry Cabernet the night before. He will not soon be forgiven, and I’m holding my sister accountable as an accomplice.

The solution

The point of this horror story is to take precaution when you’re storing our gelatos and sorbets. Make sure there aren’t any especially greedy hands in the kitchen, and do your best to hide your favorite like I’m now doing. Poor Henry is now on my bad side (Mike and Jill don’t like him much either), but I think he can make it up to me with a couple free pints of Ciao Bella.

California Dreamin’

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

The Gelatomobile was casting delicious and colorful shadows all over the Ciao Bella fans on the West Coast, sometimes quite literally (for picute of the van, see blog post “Sunny in Seattle.”) The funniest moment of the second half of West Coast tour was when the “van that can’t be missed” literally cast its shadow. On a blaringly Sunny day, my partner gazed out the passenger side window and his eyes bulged with confusion. There was a bright pink car driving next to us. To think, we had competition as the most colorful car on the road! Suddenly, the car pulled ahead and turned white. We realized the Sun reflected the pink off of our truck onto the white car. We thought we were going to die laughing. Sometimes, it’s the smallest things that make you laugh.

Besides the color confusion, we had a great time serving new and loyal Ciao Bella Gelato fans. We met so many great frozen treat lovers at Whole Foods Capitola, Whole Foods Santa Cruz, New Leaf Santa Cruz, and Whole Foods Cupertino who were all friendly and loving the free Ciao Bella! In fact, we handed out 170 samples in the first 30 minutes at Whole Foods Cupertino, which we guess is some type of record, but who keeps count when you’re talking with such great customers. Just take a look at the line in the picture, that was short compared to what we normally had!

Sometimes our customers are voracious, but nothing quite like we encountered at the first birthday party of Whole Foods Capitola. We served our first wolf! Yes, that’s actually a wolf, whose owner fed him our tantalizing blood orange sorbet. It definitely cooled that wolf off!

We also had a great time at Whole Foods Santa Cruz celebrating the Harbor to Harbor race, where there were free hot dogs in addition to refreshing sorbet and all natural gelato from Ciao Bella. Personally, a scoop of blood orange sorbet beats a hot dog any day.

The West Coast tour is off this week, but we’ll be in Southern California soon! Check the blog calendar to see where the Ciao Bella van is heading next!

Ultimate Summertime Party

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

In my eyes, it’s a fairly bold statement to say that you are throwing the ultimate summertime party. Everyone’s been to some amazing parties during the summer, but what could make this the ultimate?

Let’s run down the checklist:

  • Good people – 1000+ guests looking to have a great time [check]
  • Good music – a Z100 DJ along with NYC’s cover band The Tremors [check]
  • Good entertainment – a sea lion feeding to kick off the evening [check]
  • Good food – Kat’s Deli serving up pastrami sandwiches and Peanut Butter & Co providing sweet treats [check]
  • Ciao Bella! – well that’s just the icing on my proverbial party cake [CHECK]

The Ultimate Summertime Party has been held at the Central Park Zoo every summer for the past 26 years.  The proceeds benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society which funds research for the prevention, treatment and cure of this disease.  It attracts a variety of great sponsors such as News Corporation, Hard Rock Cafe, Samuel Adams, D’Agostino’s and many more.

Instead of talking more about the event, I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Juicce & Java

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

In these times, it’s great to see any business doing well on Main Street. As people scale back, restaurants are hit the hardest and it’s an all too common sight to see new eateries closing their doors after a few years of business. One shop that fights against this trend is Juicce and Java, located on Hartsdale Ave in Hartsdale, New York.

The owner Raj converted this ‘hole in the wall’ sandwich shop into a fully featured cafe about 3 years ago. The menu now features over 50 sandwiches and wraps to choose from, a fantastic salad selection along with a make-your-own salad bar, a variety of coffees, protein bars and healthy snacks. They also had something I’d never seen before: a machine that makes fresh Wheat Grass shots. I’ve heard about Wheat Grass and its various health benefits, but never in this form. This espresso machine-looking contraption ground up the fresh grass into a shot glass that customers then threw back and chased with slices of orange (reminiscent of tequila shots and lime). The best part about Juicce and Java is the amazing smoothie collection. They are all freshly made and feature ingredients such as 100% acai juice, agave nectar, soy protein, and antioxidant boosts.

If after all those delicious options you still have room for dessert, there’s a lovely case of Ciao Bella waiting to fill your desire. The selection of gelato and sorbet is impressive for a somewhat small cafe, and his sundae combinations are out of this world.

My visit this weekend was during the town’s weekly farmer’s market, complete with rows and tents and live music. Pedestrians strolled up and down the walkways with their fresh fruits and vegetables in tow, content with their fresh and locally grown purchases. Passing by, many people were already on their way to Juicce and Java for a quick bite or pick-me-up. Some were accustomed to having our gelato and sorbet at this eatery while for some it was a first time. Either way, a scoop of Key Lime Graham Gelato or Mango Sorbet on a hot weekend day is hard to pass up. The owner’s daughter Misha even set up a table next to mine and sampled a variety of their amazing smoothies. My favorite part of the day was the owner of the pizzeria next door hopping on the free sample bandwagon and offering free slices to locals walking past.

As the hottest part of the day was over and I was about to make my way home, Raj refused to let me leave without a smoothie for the road. Let me tell you – I’m glad he insisted. My watermelon smoothie with strawberries and agave nectar was the most refreshing drink I’ve had in ages.

We’ll be back at Juicce and Java before the summer is out so always keep a close eye on out on our Facebook page.

Whole Foods. Happy Customers.

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

When shopping around for your dinner after a long day at the office, it’s often frowned upon if you get distracted by ice cream. But when it’s a gelato bar filled with delicious Ciao Bella – who can blame you?

In the past few weeks I’ve done my part in convincing the masses that it’s O.K. to have dessert first. Hardly my civic duty; but it’s certainly fun.  The gelato bars I’ve mentioned are featured in many of the Whole Foods Markets around the tri-state area and offer a variety of treats for all types of customers.  From those who make the choice to be vegan from those with various dairy or gluten allergies, Whole Foods truly caters to their customers’ dietary needs.

My visit to the WFM on the Upper West Side during lunch-time was like a shot of espresso (or maybe a scoop or two of Triple Espresso gelato).  Masses of people were coming and going – grabbing a quick cup of coffee, a sandwich to go, and (if I had anything to do with it) a scoop of gelato. The gelato bar here was nestled in a quiet corner by the coffee bar, offering a sweet treat for those in need.

After grabbing a prosciutto caprese Panini from the deli and hitting absolutely no traffic over the GWB, I was off to the Edgewater WFM for the Surf vs. Turf Showdown.  This Food Network inspired competition drew quite the crowd and the “judges” were more than happy to squeeze in an ice cream sample at the end.

Keeping with the outdoors theme, I traveled down the road from our Florham Park office to the Madison WFM where they were grilling up savory salmon steaks in an organic ginger marinade.  The customers here impressed me with their knowledge of the product and curiosity about the sources of our hormone free milk and organic evaporated cane juice.

Before the holiday weekend began, I fit in one last gelato bar visit to the WFM in White Plains.  The diverse selection of foods in the café area was reflected by the equally eclectic customer base that came through the store.  A lot of first time samples this day and hopefully some new fans.

Yesterday’s visit to the West Orange WFM was perfect timing. The temperature outside was melting everything in sight and everyone was glad to come inside for some sorbet.  The demo ended with me being surrounded by a group of kids (future Ciao Bella fans) who asked me hundreds of questions, prying me for more stickers and tattoos until I explained to them that my demo had ended a half hour ago and it was time for me to go home for dinner.

For more Whole Foods Gelato Bar visits, come see us at Plymouth Meeting Thursday July 8th from 4pm – 7pm AND Vauxhall (Millburn-Union) from 3pm – 7pm on Friday July 9th.
